Main research topics:

1. Studies on photooxidation and photostabilization of polymeric materials;
2. Synthesis and thermal characterization of new high performance polymeric materials;
3. Synthesis and characterization of nanostructured polymeric systems;
4. Materials optimization for the construction of Ionic Polymer-Metal Composites (IPMCs), Ionic Polymeric-Polymer Composites (IP2Cs) and Green Ionic Polymer-Polymer-Metal Composites (IP2MCs) that can be applied as sensors, actuators and systems for the handling control.

5.Realization of green sensors based on natural materials.

Prof. Giovanna Di Pasquale was born in Siracusa on  1958 and graduated in Chemistry with full marks and honours at the University of Catania on July 24, 1981. She is Associate Professor of Chemical Fundamentals for Technologies (SSD CHIM / 07) at the University of Catania from March 2001. From April 2016 she is a member of the Department of Chemical Sciences.

She directed a research unit for the following PRIN projects: "Optimization of Experimental Techniques and Experimental Procedures for Production of Polymer - Metal Composites (IPMCs)" (2005) and "Totally Organic Actuators and Sensors: chemical  and physical characterization  and optimization of the manufacture techniques "(2008).

She directed the following research projects funded by the University of Catania: "Synthesis and characterization of nanostructured polymeric systems" (2003), "Optimization of production techniques of ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMCs)" (2005) and " Realization of three-dimensional ionic polymer-metal composites (3D-IPMCs) "(2007).

In the framework of the National Research and Competitiveness Operational Program 2007-2013 (PON R&C), she collaborated with “Volcan Guard” (inertial monitoring and volcanic sites), “Hyppocrates” (Development of micro and nano-technologies and advanced system to the men's health ), “PLAST_ICs” (Plastic electronics for smart disposable systems) and “RESIMA” (Intelligent Sensor Networks and Assisted Mobility for Seniors and Disadvantaged People) projects.

She has been part of the operating units that have carried out research on: a) "Synthesis of new PES-PEES model and copolymer compounds with end-reactive groups (phenyls, amines, acids). Their uses as toughening agents and adhesion promoters for epoxy resins" ; b) "Synthesis and properties of mechanically interlocked polymer architectures" (MIPA) financed by the European Community; c) "Characterization of surface of nanocomposite organic-inorganic hybrid coating", funded by INSTM (National Interuniversity Consortium for Material Science and Technology) under the "PRISMA 2003" project; d) "Nanostructured and Functional Polymer-Based Materials and Nanocomposites "(Nanofun-Poly) within the framework of the European Community-funded Network of Excellence (Contract No FP6-500361-2, VI Framework Program), which since 2008 became the " European Center For Nanostructured Polymers "(www.ecnp.eu.org)”; e) “Realization of Piezoresistive Sensors based on Elastomeric Matrix Nanocomposites” "(University Project, 2014).

As far as teaching activity is concerned, since 2001 she has held Chemistry courses for Engineering degrees and from 2011 is currently the holder of the Chemistry courses for the Industrial Engineering Degree Course (A-E and F-O). She has also held courses in “Chemistry and Technology of Restoration and Material Conservation” at the Faculty of Architecture of Siracusa and courses in “Chemistry and Material Technology”, “Science and Technology of Polymeric Materials”, “Material Technology and Applied Chemistry” for courses in Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering; "Environmental Redevelopment (Chemical Aspects Module)" for the Degree in Environmental Science (LM-75).

She is co-author of about 150 original scientific publications on international refereed journals (70), books (10) or presented as communications at National and International Conferences (68).

Her scientific activity has been always concerned with polymeric materials. More specifically, the carried out research interests are:

1) Studies on polymer photooxidation and stabilization;

2) Synthesis and characterization of new high performance polymeric materials (superpolymers);

3) Synthesis and characterization of nanostructured polymeric systems;

4) Materials optimization for the development of Ionic Polymer Metal Composites (IPMCs), Ionic Polymer-Polymer composites (IP2Cs) and green Ionic Polymer-Polymer-Metal Composites (IP2MCs) that can be used as sensors and actuators.

5)Realization of green sensors based on natural materials.

  • She was a member of the Board of the Department of Physical and Chemical Methodology for the Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of Catania.
  • She was a member of the Board of Directors of AICIng (Association of Italian Chemistry for Engineering).
  • She was a member of the College of PhD students in "Polymeric Materials for Special Purposes" of the University of Catania and of the PhD School of Biotechnology at the Faculty of Pharmacy.
  • She was a member of the Scientific Commission "Chemical Sciences" of the University of Catania.
  • She has been invited to hold a cycle of lessons within the internal course "Polymeric Circuits and Systems" at the High School of the University of Catania.
  • Member of the College of PhD students in "Materials Science  and Nanotechnologies" of the University of Catania  from 2019 to 2020.
