Learning Objectives

  • MODULO 1

    The aim of the course is to illustrate the mechanistic, kinetic and productive aspects of polymeric materials, correlating their chemical-physical properties with the molecular properties

  • MODULO 2

    The course aims to illustrate the organizational and implementation aspects of the design and synthesis polymers, both in the homogeneous and heterogeneous phase

Detailed Course Content

  • MODULO 1

    Polymer structure: Nomenclature and Constitutional analysis; Structure-Property Relationship; Configurational analysis; microtatticity and NMR analysis; Conformational analysis of solid-state macromolecules and helical symmetries.

    Molecular masses of polymers, the degree of polymerization and polydispersion. Main monomers for the synthesis of polymers.

    Mechanisms and kinetics in the synthesis of polymers and copolymers obtained by means of step and chain polymerization, in a homogeneous and heterogeneous phase.

    Polymer production processes and examples of industrial preparation. Notes on the most common polymeric materials.

  • MODULO 2

    Purification and stabilization of solvents, monomers, and catalysts used in polymerization.

    Synthesis of polymers by ionic and radical mechanisms, using monophasic and polyphasic processes.

    Synthesis of polymers by means of step-growth mechanisms, by mass and solution processes.

    Synthesis of block and statistical copolymers.

    Characterization of synthesized polymers: solubility, viscosity, molecular mass distribution, etc.
