The Department of Chemical Sciences to host the regional finals of the Chemistry Games on March 28.

About 200 upper secondary school students will take part in the competition promoted by the Italian Chemical Society and coordinated in Sicily by the Italian Chemical Society – Sicily Section.

On 28 March 2026, the Department of Chemical Sciences of the University of Catania will host, together with other Sicilian universities, the regional individual finals of the Chemistry Games, a national competition for upper secondary school students promoted by the Italian Chemical Society and coordinated at the regional level by the Italian Chemical Society – Sicily Section, chaired by Prof. Cosimo G. Fortuna, professor at the Department of Chemical Sciences.

The regional round will take place simultaneously at several university venues across the region and will involve, in addition to the University of Catania, the Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences of the University of Messina and the Department of Biological, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies of the University of Palermo. At the Catania venue, around 200 students from upper secondary schools in the surrounding provinces, selected during the previous school-level round, will take part in the competition.

The Chemistry Games represent one of the most important national initiatives dedicated to promoting scientific excellence among high school students. The competition consists of several stages: after the school-level selection, the best students qualify for the regional finals, from which the participants in the national final are selected.

During the regional round, students will tackle questions in general, organic, inorganic and analytical chemistry, differentiated by level of study and divided into the different competition categories established by the official regulations. The top-ranked students in each category will qualify for the national final of the Chemistry Games, which brings together the best students from all Italian regions.

This initiative represents an important opportunity for interaction between schools and universities and highlights the commitment of the Department of Chemical Sciences of the University of Catania to promoting scientific culture and supporting young talents interested in chemical sciences.
