Cosimo Gianluca FORTUNA

Associate Professor of Organic chemistry [CHIM/06]

Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry (CHIM/06)

Courses: Organic Chemistry II at the B.D. course in Industrial Chemistry, Organic Chemistry I at the B.D. course in Scienze e Tecnologie Alimentari.

Main research topics:

Prof. Cosimo Gianluca Fortuna was born in Catania on 22nd  January 1975; he got the degree in Chemistry in 2000 at Catania University. In 2004 he finished his Ph.D. During these three years he acquired a lot of experience in synthesis of heterocyclic chemistry as demonstrated by the financial support that the University of Catania assigned him to got his research. He took part in many school to improve his experience. He had a research contract (September/December 2000) with Chemistry Department, University of Catania. Since April 2004 to October 2006 he had a post-doctoral position at the Department of Chemistry, University of Catania. Since November 2006 he is an Organic Chemistry Assistant at the same Department.  He is member of Società Chimica Italiana and of the QSAR Society. From 2006 to 2009 he was a member and from December 2018 he is a member of the directive committee of the Società Chimica Italiana (SCI) young group. From 2009 to 2014 he is member of the directive committee of the Sicilian section of the SCI. He took part in organize committee of many national and international meetings.

He is  referee for four national journals.

He is member of the editorial board for the American Journal of Organic Chemistry.

Research projects:

•In 2002 he received financial support from the University of Catania (Funds for young researcher) as coordinator of a research project on: “Progettazione e sintesi di nuovi eterocicli ad attività antitumorale”.

•He was member of the Catania group (coordinated by Prof. G. Musumarra) of three national research project (Cofin 2002 and Cofin 2004 and 60%).

•Since 2010 to now he is COORDINATOR of a FIRB project entitled: “HETEROCYCLIC SYSTEMS IN THE MOLECULAR DESIGN OF POTENTIAL ANTIBACTERIAL COMPOUNDS”awarded a 189.000 euro research grants.

•From 2011 to 2013 he was member of the Catania group of a national research project. (Prin 09)

•  Since 2012 he is member of Bari group of a national research project. (Prin 12)

•  In 2012 he won  ISCRA-CINECA announcement (Italian SuperComputing Resource Allocation) with an Assigned budget of 40.000 hours.

Teaching activity:

From 2007 to 2009 he taught “Elementi di Chimica organica e laboratorio”

From 2006 to 2009 he taught “Chimica Organica per i beni culturali e protettivi consolidanti organici”

From 2008 to 2010 he taught “Degradazione di materiali organici nei Beni Culturali”

From 2009 to 2010 he taught Organic chemistry course 1.

From 2010 to 2011 he taught Organic chemistry course 2.

From 2012 he teaches Organic chemistry to " Scienze e Tecnologie alimentari"

He acquired a broad experience in synthetic organic chemistry, with special emphasis to heterocyclic compounds and in computational chemistry. He became, nationally, one of the most specialized researcher in heterocyclic synthesis. This is attested by many oral and poster presentations at national and international meetings. He is author of 54 refereed publications on international journals in the field of organic chemistry,  photochemistry, and computational chemistry. According to the ISI Web of Science and Scopus search engine he has an h-index of 17 and 720 citations. He had 42 papers in the last 10 years.

He is author of a national patent.

He was invited speaker in QSAR meeting CADD 2012 Chicago.

He done 10 oral communications and 50 posters at national and international meetings.
