Full Professor of Chemical foundations of technologies [CHIM/07]

Born in Floridia (SR), Italy, June 30, 1958

University studies: Chemistry degree, 110/110 cum laude, 1984, University of Catania.

                              PhD in Chemical Sciences, 1988, University of Catania.

Careers / Employment: January 1985- June 85, graduate Fellow - University of Catania.

            1985-88 PhD student - University of Catania.

            1989-90 post-doc Fellow – University of Catania

          July 1990- October 1998 – Researcher - University of Catania.

November 1998-2001 – Associate Professor - "La Sapienza" University,of Rome

Since October 2001 – Full professor of Chemistry (SSD CHIM/07) - University of Catania.

Teaching activity: Since 1994 to the present holder of the Chemistry course for students of the C.d.L. in Engineering. 2001-2002 course in Chemistry and Technology Applied to the Environment and the Territory. From 2005 to 2010 holder of the course of Chemical Methodologies for the Environment and for the  2011-2012 holder of the course of Elements of Sustainable and Green Chemistry.

Scientific interest.

  • Synthesis of monomeric and polymeric organic compounds.
  • Synthesis of organometallic complexes and their potential use as sensors.
  • Molecular recognition of amino acids by phosphonic derivatives.
  • Synthesis of eco-friendly flame retardant additives.

Other:

  • In 1985 he was the winner of a post-graduate scholarship of the “Guido Donegani” Foundation. In 1986 he won the "Operosità Scientifica" award for Chemical Sciences, from the Accademia Gioenia of Catania.
  • Since 2012 he has been a member of the Executive Board of AICIng and since 2014, for two consecutive terms, he has been the President-elect of the Italian Association of Engineering Chemists (AICIng).
  • For the three-year period 2016-2018 he was a member of the Executive Board of the Division of Industrial Chemistry of the SCI (Italian Chemical Society).
  • Member of the Working Table between the Italian Chemical Society and the National University Council (2017-2022). Since 2012 he is a member of the Gioenia Academy of Catania.
  • President of the Italian Division of Chemistry for Technologies (2020-2022)
  • In 2023 he received the Award for outstanding scientific and educational merits and for the services carried out for AICIng from the Italian Chemical Engineering Association (AICIng).
