Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide the basic knowledge on chemical plants and industrial processes.

Detailed Course Content

1. Chemical process design

Block flow diagrams (BFD), process flow diagrams (PFD), process and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID). The design of an industrial chemical process. Input-output and recycle structures of processes. Separation systems. Energy network.

2. Mass balances with exercises

Mass conservation law. Balances without reaction. Balances with reactions. Balances with recycles.

3. Elements of chemical plants

Construction materials and their mechanical properties. Treatment and transport of solids. Treatment and transport of fluids: pumps and compressors. Distillation and other separation processes. Heat exchangers. Chemical reactors. Measurements and control systems. Utilities.

4. Economical analysis of chemical processes

Cost estimation: capital investments and production costs. Depreciation, value of money with time, cash flow. Profitability indicators: return on investment (ROI); payback period (PBP); DCFROR.

5. Analysis and evaluation of chemical risk

Hazard and operability analysis (HAZOP). Quantitative risk assessment. Fault tree analysis. Explosive combustions and runaway reactions. Discussion on case histories.

6. Quality systems

ISO 9001. ISO 14001. EMAS. OHSAS 18001.
