Learning Objectives

Aim of the course is to provide an adequate knowledge of the main forms of physical and chemical deterioration of the constituent materials of works of art, which is necessary for defining the state of conservation of the artefacts and implementing actions of prevention, maintenance, restoration. Students will also learn the characteristics of the main chemical cleaning systems and methods, as well as the chemical principles that regulate their action and effectiveness.

Knowledge of the main concepts of Cultural Heritage, deterioration, safeguard and conservation, monitoring. Knowledge of the main characteristics of artefacts and their classification according to material science profile. Knowledge of the main investigation techniques. Ability to properly discuss a “case study”.


Detailed Course Content

  • Cultural Heritage regulations and standard protocols
  • Role of atmospheric pollutants on degradation and decay of historical and artistic artefacts
  • The degradation of stone materials
  • The degradation of metals: corrosion processes in particular cases of artistic interest.
  • Mural painting
  • Decay of binders and of paint varnishes. Degradation of cellulosic and protein materials, and analogous: wood, paper, textiles.
  • Cellulosic materials for Cultural Heritages
  • Nanomaterials for cleaning, consolidation, protection.
