Grazia Maria Lucia MESSINA
Associate Professor of Physical Chemistry (CHIM/02)
Main research topics:
- Functionalization and surface modification
- Interaction of biological molecules at the interface
- Nanostructuring of surfaces
- Smart surfaces for biological applications
Grazia M. L. Messina is Associate Professor of Physical Chemistry at the Department of Chemical Sciences, University of Catania. She received her degree in Chemistry in 2003 and her PhD in Chemical Sciences in 2009, with a thesis entitled “A Study of Molecular Self-Organizing Processes at Surfaces”.
Following her PhD, she carried out postdoctoral research and subsequently worked as a fixed-term researcher (RTD-A) within the competitive FIRB – Futuro in Ricerca research project entitled “Peptide-based Conformational Switches: Design, Synthesis, and Applications”, for which she was awarded the project and served as Principal Investigator of the Catania research unit. In 2020, she was appointed as a fixed-term researcher (RTD-B) and since 2023 she has been Associate Professor of Physical Chemistry.
Her research activity focuses on Surface and Interface Chemistry, with particular emphasis on the physicochemical investigation of surface nanostructuring, molecular self-organization processes at interfaces, and thin films of conducting polymers for applications in bioelectronics. Her research is predominantly experimental and has resulted in numerous publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Throughout her career, she has established collaborations with several research groups and institutions in Italy and abroad, including the University of Münster, ETH Zürich, the University of Ankara, Université Paris-Diderot, Forschungszentrum Jülich, and Linköping University, as well as several Italian universities and research institutions.
She is also involved in teaching activities and supervises experimental undergraduate and graduate research theses within the Chemistry and Chemical Sciences degree programmes.
