EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

- She graduated in Chemistry (curriculum Inorganic chemistry) magna cum laude from Catania Univ. in 1989.

- From May 1989 to Jan. 1990 she was a postgraduate student in the group of Prof. T. J. Marks at the Northwestern University, where she began her research activity in the field of metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD).  February 1990 to August 1990 she had a research contract from Northwestern University to complete the work carried out in the field of synthesis of superconducting films by means of the chemical vapor deposition of metallorganic compounds (MOCVD) under the guidance of Prof. T. J. Marks.

- In 1994, she received her Ph.D. from Catania University discussing a thesis, supervisor Prof. I. Fragalà, on the “Synthesis of high Tc superconductors through MOCVD and their characterization”.

-On the 15-01-2001 she was appointed researcher in General and Inorganic Chemistry and on the 01-02-2005 she was appointed associate professor in General and Inorganic Chemistry at the Dipartimento Scienze Chimiche, Università degli Studi di Catania.

 

DIDACTIC ACTIVITY

2-Nov-2017-to Jan. 2020, President of the Joint Commission Professors and Students of the Department of Chemical Sciences.

- From 2012 to October 2017 she has been a member of the Joint Commission Professors-Students of the Department of Chemical Sciences.

- Since 2003 she is a member of the Ph.D. commettee in "Materials Science" (XXI-XXV cycle), then modified in "Science and technology of materials" (XXVI-XXVIII cycle), and from 2013 "Materials and nanotechnology science" ( XXIX-XXXVII cycle). 

Invited at some national Schools on Materials and at PhD courses to give lessons on MetalOCVD and SEM/EDX-WDX characterization.

 

Mentor of more than 50 theses of bachelor and 40 theses of master students and n. 10 Ph.D theses.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY

My research activity is mainly focused on the chemical vapour phase processes  starting from the synthesis of novel MOCVD precursors, to the fabrication of thin films  and nanostructured materials.

Current research interests include:

  1. the synthesis of metalorganic precursors of  lanthanides, transition, alkaline, and alkaline- earth metals for metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) and for Molecular Layer Deposition processes;
  2. MOCVD fabrication of nanostructured binary oxides;
  3. MOCVD of binary and complex fluorides as host matrices for up- and down-conversion materials;
  4. MOCVD of  functional perovskites (LaCoO3, La1-xSrxMnO3, BiFeO3, Pr1-xCaxMnO3);
  5. Hybrid multifunctional systems by a combined MOCVD/MLD approach.

 

She has authored more than 170 articles on peer-reviewed journals and more than 90 contributes to national and international conferences.

The research activity is mainly focused on chemical vapour phase processes starting from the synthesis of novel precursors to the fabrication of thin film and nanostructured materials for applications in energy
harvesting, conversion devices and photovoltaics. Current research interests include:
1) nanostructured materials with multifunctional properties;
2) synthesis of novel precursors for metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) and solution processes;
3) MOCVD fabrication of nanostructured binary oxides and functional perovskites;
4) MOCVD of binary and complex fluorides as host matrices for up- and down-conversion materials;
5) Hybrid multifunctional systems by a combined MOCVD/MLD approach.
